A Legacy of Service to Guyana

Founded on 1 January 1950 by Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan, the PPP/Civic has grown into a national, multi-ethnic party holding 36 of 65 seats in the National Assembly.

    First elections under universal suffrage — PPP wins 18 of 24 seats.

    Guyana achieves independence from Britain on 26 May.

    First free and fair elections in 28 years — Cheddi Jagan elected President.

  5. 1997

    Janet Jagan becomes Guyana's first female President.
