Founded on 1 January 1950 by Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan, the People's Progressive Party/Civic has served as Guyana's foremost national movement for over seven decades — holding 36 of 65 seats in the National Assembly.

Rooted in Social democracy and Democratic centralism, the PPP/Civic is committed to a Centre-left agenda that unites Guyanese of all ethnicities, regions, and backgrounds under one motto: One People, One Nation, One Destiny.

1950

PPP founded by Cheddi & Janet Jagan on 1 January in Georgetown.

1953

First elections under universal suffrage — PPP wins 18 of 24 seats.

1966

Guyana achieves independence from Britain on 26 May.

1992

First free and fair elections in 28 years — Cheddi Jagan elected President.

1997

Janet Jagan becomes Guyana's first female President.

2020

Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali elected President — PPP/Civic governs into the oil era.
